Voiture 1536

1536Cemetary.jpg

In June, 2009, along with other Veterans Groups in the Lapeer, Michigan, area, Voiture 1536 was approached by a lady who had been a care provider to a veteran, Stephen Gilbert. She had found among his things a grave marker plaque and wanted to see if any of the Veterans groups would help to have it installed.

Chef De Gar, Wayne Jacobs contacted other Veterans Organizations in the Lapeer County area for help.

On September 22, 2009, the plaque was put in its proper place. With other Veterans Organizations, a proper ceremony was held.

BUT THE REST OF THE STORY ••••••

While at the cemetery, Chef De Gar, Wayne Jacobs noticed an old Civil War cannon which was broken on its base and in much need of repair. Again, Mr. Jacobs was able to organize other Veterans Groups and the Township Management to have the cannon fixed and a new memorial dedicated.

The picture attached shows the result of his effort along with the cooperation of the VFM, Veterans of Viet Nam~ American Legion, Young Marines and the Auxiliaries of each of those groups.

On Armed Forces Day we had the Dedication of a New Veteran's Memorial which included a Fly Over from Selfridge Air Base of two A 10's.

This is a completely new Veteran's Memorial with walls for future remains of Veterans to be interred and benches for people to spend time and visit.

Never too late!

PG Mel Heath was given a gentleman’s wreck at Voiture 1536 Lapeer on Sunday, November 8, 2009.  Mel is 91 years old and a proud patriot.  He regularly participates in parades around Lapeer County as well as around his winter home in Florida.  Though he no longer walks the parade routes, he can always catch a ride in a Jeep or Hummer.  Now he proudly rides the Voiture 1536 train.

Mel is still able to wear his original uniform.  He jokes that when he unpacked his uniform years ago, he was a bit discouraged as he had more wrinkles than his uniform.

Mel served with General Patton in the 3rd Army, 257 Field Artillery Battalion.

This plaque was found in Stephen Gilbert’s closet by his care taker Peggy Snow 4 years after his death.
She had tried to get help getting it placed from the Veteran Affairs Office, but they said they did not have the funds.
Earlier this year she contacted the Veteran Organizations in Lapeer County for help. Two days latter Wayne Jacobs,
Chef de Gare of V-1536 was the first but not the last to contact her.  He took the plaque and said that he would make
all the arrangements.  On September 22, 2009 the plaque was put in its proper place.  Joining V-1536 in the ceremony

Menominee County Voiture #1288 of the Michigan 40 Et 8 announces

scholarship winners for Nurses Training for the 2009 Year.

For many years the Menominee County 40 Et 8, Fraternal Veterans Organization, has provided scholarships for students attending college to become nurses. These scholarships are for four years and total $1,500.00. Many students from Monominee County have received these scholarships and many are nurses today.

The Menominee County 40 Et 8 has less than 40 members and have provided money for youth sports. Club members are all members of the American Legion and war era veterans. It has long been our goal to support as many scholarships as we can afford.

This years winners are:

James Newlin, Stephenson High School

James will be attending Bay College for Nursing. He states that, "Growing up I have always found medicine to be fascinating. I have decided over the past few years that I want to take the passion I have for medicine and put it into reality by going into Nursing." During his years at Stepenson High School, James has been involved in many extra curricular activities. He was a starter on the Varsity Basketball Team and has done an excellent job of managing both athletics and academics. James truly exemplifies a student-athlete.

Megan Kleiman, Bark River Harris High School

Megan plans on attending Bay College of Nursing to obtain a RN Degree and then transferring to a larger University to eventually obtain a Bachelors of Science Degree in Nursing. She has been dually enrolled at Bay College for the past two years where she already has earned 17 credits. Megan states, "I've always known that I wanted to pursue a career in the medical field, but the decision to become a nurse came only last year at the end of my Junior year." Megan has earned the title of Class Valedictorian while being very involved in community service organizations and clubs throughout her High School years at Bark River Harris. As a Junior Megan attended American Legion Auxiliary Girls' State where she was elected Mayor. For the past four years Megan has had many accomplishments on both the Basketball and Volleyball courts and she has learned as an athlete to give and earn respect. With all of the academic studies, the athletic programs, Community Service Projects, Megan has still found time to work up to 20 hours a week. I know she will make a fine Nurse.

Cassandra Herres, Stephenson High School

Cassandra comes highly recommended by her teachers to become a Nurse and has earned the respect of many as an athlete, in school organizations and in the classroom. Cassandra states, "I have always wanted to be a Nurse ever since she was little. Helping people is one of my passions, I just love doing it. I like being a helping hand, and Nursing is a great way to use my talents and help others when they are sick and needy." I had the opportunity to meet Cassandra by accident the other day in the office at Stephenson, she does not know me, and my first impression of her was, wow, what a Great people person. Her people skills are outstanding and she has the qualities and academic abilities to become great in what ever she chooses and I'm glad she has decided to become a Nurse.

The Officers and Members of the Menominee County 40 et 8 would like to congratulate the winners of these Scholarships and hope that this will help in a small way to achieve your goal of becoming a Nurse.

Jerry Lynch
Chairman Nurses Training
